Eyes Fixed on Jesus
Hebrews 12:1-3
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." — Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV)
A Great Cloud of Witnesses
The writer of Hebrews has just finished an extraordinary catalog of faith in chapter 11 — Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Rahab, and countless others who lived and died trusting God's promises. Now he turns to us. These faithful men and women surround us like spectators in an arena, their lives testifying that God is faithful and that the race is worth running.
We are not alone in this race. We follow in the footsteps of those who endured before us, and their example strengthens our resolve.
Laying Aside Every Weight
A runner does not carry unnecessary weight. The writer distinguishes between "sin which clings so closely" and every other "weight." Not everything that slows us down is sinful — but anything that hinders our pursuit of Christ must be examined and, if necessary, set aside.
What are your weights? They might be good things that have become ultimate things. Comforts that have become addictions. Habits that distract you from the race. The call is not to live in deprivation but to run with freedom — unburdened, focused, and light on our feet.
Running with Endurance
The race is not a sprint. It requires endurance — the ability to keep going when the path is steep, when our legs ache, when the finish line seems impossibly far away. Endurance is built not in easy seasons but in hard ones. It is forged in the moments when quitting seems reasonable and we choose to keep running anyway.
But this endurance is not white-knuckled willpower. It flows from fixing our eyes on the right person.
Looking to Jesus
Here is the heart of the passage: "looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith." Jesus is both the originator of our faith and the one who will bring it to completion. He started the work, He sustains the work, and He will finish the work.
When we fix our eyes on our circumstances, we grow weary. When we fix our eyes on ourselves, we grow discouraged. When we fix our eyes on Jesus, we find the strength to endure. He is the focal point that keeps us oriented and moving forward.
Joy Set Before Him
What sustained Jesus through the agony of the cross? Joy. "For the joy that was set before him." What was that joy? It was the joy of accomplishing the Father's will. The joy of redeeming His people. The joy of destroying sin and death forever. The joy of bringing many sons and daughters to glory.
If Jesus endured the cross for joy, we too can endure our trials with eyes fixed on the same Jesus who sits now at the right hand of God — victorious, reigning, and interceding for us.
Reflect
What weights — even good things — might be slowing you down in your pursuit of Christ? How can you practically fix your eyes on Jesus in the middle of your daily routine?
