Where Your Treasure Is
Matthew 6:19-21
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." — Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV)
The Vulnerability of Earthly Treasure
Jesus is remarkably honest about the nature of earthly wealth. Moths consume fabric. Rust corrodes metal. Thieves break in and steal. Every treasure this world offers is subject to decay, loss, and destruction. Nothing here is truly secure.
This is not a condemnation of material things. God gives us good gifts to enjoy. But Jesus warns against making these fragile things the anchor of our hearts. When we build our security on what can be taken away, we build on sand.
The Security of Heavenly Treasure
In contrast, treasures stored in heaven are beyond the reach of every destructive force. No moth can touch them. No rust can corrode them. No thief can steal them. These are treasures kept by the power of God Himself — imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.
What are heavenly treasures? They include knowing God, loving others, acts of faithfulness, generosity given in secret, and lives poured out in service to Christ. These investments yield eternal dividends.
The Heart Follows the Treasure
Notice that Jesus does not say, "Where your heart is, there your treasure will be." He reverses it: "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." This is a profound insight into human nature. Our hearts follow our investments.
If we invest our time, energy, and resources in earthly things, our hearts will be earthbound. If we invest in the kingdom of God, our hearts will be drawn heavenward. The practical implication is clear: if you want to change where your heart is oriented, change where you invest.
Practical Reorientation
This teaching is not abstract — it is deeply practical. How do we lay up treasure in heaven today? Through generosity that expects nothing in return. Through prayer that seeks God's face rather than merely His hand. Through service that builds up the body of Christ. Through faithfulness in the small, unseen moments that only God witnesses.
Each of these acts is a deposit in an account that will never lose value.
Reflect
If someone looked at how you spend your time and money, what would they conclude about where your treasure is? What is one practical step you can take this week to invest more intentionally in heavenly treasure?
